In 2009 Doran Payne, former Chef of Rhapsody Restaurant bought Prairie Bread Kitchen, ideally located in the heart of downtown Oak Park’s Marion Street. Doran always envisioned having a café-bakery where he could craft fresh, seasonal foods that could simply be enjoyed everyday. Prairie Bread Kitchen has been a loyal part of the community for over 15 years. In keeping with the original vision of Prairie Bread Kitchen, Doran set out to maintain everything you love about the café and create new offerings to enhance your overall experience.

OUR JOURNEY
Originally from the Caribbean Island of St. Lucia, Doran grew up benefiting from the availability of fresh produce straight from the islands trees, perhaps the reason for his dedication to freshness. In 1995 Doran left the Island and headed to Europe to begin his culinary training. 8 years and 5 cities later, Doran moved to Chicago as the Dining Room Chef of Four Seasons Hotel Chicago where he met his wife Laura, who was a Food and Beverage Manager at the hotel. Laura continues to run restaurants for over 10 years.

After Doran’s time cooking in some of the top restaurants throughout Europe and the U.S., Doran insists “you shouldn’t only have to go to a Fine Dining restaurant to enjoy a good meal and quality fresh bread”.
